Sustainability: A Collective Responsibility for Future Generations

Sustainability is fundamentally about ensuring that the next generation inherits a world that is as rich in resources and experiences as the one we have enjoyed. To achieve this, we must carefully consider our approach to environmental stewardship.

Approach 1: Rethinking Consumption

Traditionally, we have often emphasized the need to "reduce" consumption, particularly in discussions surrounding carbon emissions. For example, my father provided for me within his means, and I aspire to do the same for my child. However, telling our children to "reduce their consumption" can feel like a contradiction. While it is true that we have enjoyed the Earth's resources, we must ask ourselves if we are genuinely serving the next generation by simply preaching reduction.

Approach 2: Innovating for a Sustainable Future

Instead, we should focus on developing products and services that prioritize zero or reduced emissions and utilize renewable materials. We must invest in innovations that absorb emissions and enhance our green cover. Rather than framing our efforts around reduction, we should embrace the concept of "redevise."

This shift requires collective effort. Each stakeholder, from designers and marketers to sales professionals and consumers, has a crucial role to play. For example, designers must think outside the box. When considering materials like steel, which is ubiquitous in various applications, we must recognize the significant water usage involved in its processing. Freshwater, which constitutes only 2.5% of the world's water supply, is essential for all living organisms. The looming water scarcity poses a threat that could potentially lead to global conflicts in the future. It is our responsibility to ensure that our children have access to the resources we once enjoyed.

Moreover, the greenhouse gas emissions resulting from steel production are substantial. According to the International Energy Agency, the direct CO2 emissions from crude steel production are approximately 1.4 tons per ton of steel produced. Is simply advocating for reduction sufficient? Instead, we should adopt "redevise" as our guiding principle. We need to invent alternative processing methods and explore new renewable materials to replace steel wherever possible.

In this context, R&D professionals have a critical responsibility. They must collaborate with experts from diverse fields, engage with research institutions, and involve students to generate innovative ideas. This collaborative approach is essential for achieving sustainable solutions that can ensure a better future for the next generation.

If we commit to making responsible choices today, we can provide our children with a world where they can thrive, just as we have. A proverb states, "If the mother tiger leaps 8 feet, the cub will leap 16 feet." By setting a positive example, we can inspire future generations to exceed our efforts in sustainability.

Together, let us forge a path that not only meets our needs but also enriches the lives of those who come after us.
